Jaden Castro - The Phoenix (Sunday Series - Episode 5)

The Sunday Series was launched by Jaden Castro in November as his "way of showing [his] journey, thoughts, and energy with you, one verse at a time." The collection of freestyles and accompanying visuals, of which five have been dropped so far, featured Castro flowing freely over an instrumental, with each episode capturing the unique essence the traveled artist brings to the table. Since the majority of the episodes clock in at less than 2 minutes, it doesn't require much time investment to check out the series in its entirety. But if you've ever pressed play on a Castro joint, you already know you'll be playing it back more than once to catch the intricate collection of lyrical gems being dropped.

"Phoenix" is the most recent Sunday Series release. Throughout the track, Jaden floats over the mystifying instrumental in jaw dropping fashion as his explosive energy juxtaposes with the energy of the sonic backdrop. Those that have been listening to Castro since the voyage started can feel the maturity on the mic just as easily as they hear it - he's always been skillful with the poetic, serpentine flow but what he's putting out today exemplifies a sword that's been sharpened and forged through life experiences.

It's all about alchemy on this one, crashing and landing and turning each step of the journey into a valuable lesson. You get the sense Castro appreciates the journey even if he hasn't enjoyed learning every lesson - it's rebirth, it's growth, and it's all been necessary. Just like the next rebirth will be as the voyage continues.

Stay tuned for Episode 6 of the Sunday Series.

The Sunday Series audio is available via SoundCloud and you can watch the visuals on YouTube. Press play on "The Phoenix" below.

DREgottheBLUES - Wrong Kind

There are a lot of talented artists in Connecticut flying under the radar - young creatives who are putting in the work to organically build a platform to stand on, in hopes of gaining a larger audience for their art and their expression. It's kids and young adults out there chasing dreams, ignoring the naysayers and taking heed of the insight and wisdom from the older cats who helped pave the road upon which they are now walking.  DREgottheBLUES is perhaps one of the most notable examples of this, making waves and gaining notoriety in recent years. If you've had the pleasure of witnessing the CT-native live, or you've pressed play on any of his releases, you're aware of the energy he carries. There's a blunt authenticity about him, coupled with a child-like nature that simultaneously blends and clashes with his mature, experienced perspective. In a world where the game is saturated with copies and trends, DREgottheBLUES is carving his own path and, as a result, he ...

Joey Batts - LaFz [prod. Greg Rivers] (Video)

One of Connecticut's elder statesmen kicks off the New Year with a surprise release, giving the visual treatment to a record that finds life on his 2024 project,  Joseph .  The Greg Rivers-produced "LaFz" showcases Joey Batts doing what Batts does best - it's a track packed with bars that hit hard, wrapped up in a pristine flow from start to finish. Listeners will have to run it back a few times to really catch and appreciate the clever wordplay and sharp lyricism. And you'll have no problem doing so thanks to the complete package that is "LaFz." In 2025 we're getting Batts at his peak, bringing decades of experience to the table as he combines a mature perspective with earned arrogance and subtle humor.  The production on this one is rolling and thunderous, creating a vibe that captures the confidence of Joey's lyrics wonderfully. On "LaFz," and throughout the entirety of Joseph , listeners are privileged to experience the symbiotic re...
